Debut cd of the Amsterdam Jazz Quintet on the Groove Label withRobert Jan Vermeulen on piano. Robert studied jazzmusic at the Royal Conservatory in the Hague, just after finishing his study he won the Pall Mall Swing Award, a price for young promising talent.
He studied in New York with great pianoplayers like Richie Beirach, Barry Harris and Kenny Werner. He worked regularly in Holland with his trio with different guests like Tom Harrel, Herb Geller, Sal Nistico, Judy Niemack and Chet Baker.
He started his own band, the Amsterdam Jazz Quintet ,in 1991, with this group he did several thematical projects like 'Pictures of Amsterdam' , 'Portraits' and 'Playground' with singer Fee Claassen. (all on Challenge Records) These cd's got excellent reviews in the Jazz Press. The band played different festivals in Holland, Belgium, Germany, Spain and Mexico.

Entr'acte: The first tune grabs you immediately: a fantastic stretched-out melody, played unison by muted trumpet and tenor sax, driven forward by that unstoppable bass. Vermeulen is a musician of the highest pedigree, in his composing as well as in his playing. His fondness for slow-sliding, minorish tales brings us music that touches the soul. With "Signature" he hasnt only made a very strong CD; he has signed his name to the honor roll of the Duth jazz scene.
Rails: One of the most exciting contemporary jazz groups in the country at this moment. Ten contemporary pieces full of lyrical and sensual adventure, while, just under the surface, you can always feel the groove.
